The search for a light plane and its pilot, reported missing on the NSW-Queensland border, has ended in tragedy with the aircraft's wreckage located, along with the body of a 72-year-old man.

Ian Sinnott took off from Murwillumbah Airport in the ultra light aircraft on Tuesday morning, before a member of the public reported seeing the plane encountering difficulties at nearby Liumpinwood, about 25km west of Murwillumbah, shortly after.

A searcher on horeseback located the wreckage on a private property at Limpinwood around 9am Thursday.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau and police will investigate the crash.
