A warning has been issued following scam SMS messages being sent, claiming to be from Medicare regarding rebates.

The text encourages the recipient to follow a link to a website and enter personal information in order to claim the $200 rebate.

The Department of Human Services has released a statement on the issue, with the Australian Cyber Security Centre now involved and moving quickly to take down the malicious website.

The statement from the DHS advises anyone who receives the SMS to not click on the link or respond.

Instead, the incident should be reported to ScamWatch, and the message deleted.

If you have received the message and followed its instructions, the DHS advises contacting the Scams and Identity Theft Helpdesk on 1800 941 126.
