Total fire bans have been declared for five NSW regions around the Central West and southern parts of the state as hot and windy conditions return.

Firefighters will be keeping an eye on all fires burning around the state, and are pleased they've made progress overnight with two devastating large fires - the Sir Ivan blaze near Dunedoo and the Kains Flat blaze northeast of Mudgee.

"Thankfully they've been contained," RFS spokesman Paul Best told AAP on Friday.

The RFS is still counting the cost of last weekend's "catastrophic" fire conditions that resulted in at least 44 homes being razed, mostly in central-western NSW, he said.

Assessment teams continue to work in the Warrumbungle region after the Sir Ivan fire blackened 52,000 hectares destroying 34 homes, a church, a community hall and 120 outbuildings.

With Friday's forecast in the 40s, winds up to 50km/h, combined with very low humidity, severe fire warnings are in place for the ACT and the Lower Central West Plains.

Other regions with total fire bans in effect are the Central Ranges; Southern Slopes; Southern Ranges and Monaro Alpine.

The RFS is urging residents to be on alert.
