Detectives allege that a red Holden crashed into the back of a Ute, which then ricocheted into a tree killing the 35-year-old road worker upon impact.

A second worker, placing cones onto the road, was flown to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Traffic management company Altus Traffic has confirmed both victims were employees working at the location.

The alleged suspect believed to be a Caucasian male in his 30's, fled the scene on foot, before escaping in a black Hyundai SUV, last seen driving east of Ballarto Rd.

Motorists are being redirected to use Ballarto Rd, O’Gradys Rd or Wedge Rd to avoid the closure of Hall Rd between Cadles Rd and Rowellyn Ave.

Meanwhile, Police along with air wing remain on the hunt for the alleged offender.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or has dashcam footage of the incident has been asked to contact CrimeStoppers on 1800 333 000.
