Police are investigating after after officers saw a flash in a car they tried intercepting, which then crashed in Tarneit.

Members from a specialist squad came across a suspect vehicle on Tarneit Rd, around 4am on Monday.

When they flicked their lights on they saw a flash inside the car, which then went over over a median strip and several lanes of traffic, before smashing into a childcare centre.

The building then burst into flames, the driver got out of the car but only managed to get a short distance away.

Officers were driven back by the blaze as they tried rescuing the man.

Firies arrived and put out the blaze but the man died at the scene.

Children were just two hours away from arriving, the owner says it's a miracle no one else was injured.

"There's no children been involved, no families been involved, that's the important thing," the owner of the childcare centre told 9 News.

Police are on scene and say it will take them a while to figure out what happened.

"An investigation into the incident has commenced and will be oversighted by Professional Standards Command as per standard procedure," Vic Police said in a statement.

Tarneit Road is expected to be closed for most of the day.
